BitMex, which is among the largest Crypto exchanges in the globe, has announced former Hong Kong regulator Angelina Kwan as its new chief operating officer. Angelina Kwan was previously the managing director and head of the HKEX (Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited).
Extensive Relevant Experience
The new chief operating officer, who has joined the Crypto exchange at a period when it is experiencing exceptional growth, will be operating out of Hong Kong and has said that she will be working closely with regulators and holding a constructive dialogue with them that will promote the growth of the digital asset class.
The current Crypto space in this market has not been seen to be very favorable especially with both China and South Korea slapping a ban on the sector in 2017. The current CEO of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority Norman Chan Tak-lam last month warned the nation against the high risks that come with Cryptocurrencies while the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong has warned of manipulation and fraud within the Crypto space.
The co-founder and CEO of BitMex Arthur Hayes in his statements on the new addition said that the former regulator’s decision to join the firm was an indication of the shift in perspective that the rapidly growing Crypto industry was experiencing. He added that the vast experience that Kwan was bringing to the firm, would be very important in the firm’s initiative to continue lobbying for the adoption of Cryptocurrency in the mainstream.
Women In The Crypto Sector
Kwan has experience in a wide variety of sectors including experience in regulation, business development, investor and stakeholder relationship, trading platforms, and restructuring. She was at the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong for a total of eight years and has twenty-four years of experience in various leadership roles within Asia as well as the United States.
She has stated that some of her most memorable achievements have been coming on to organizations which were on the brink of major breakthroughs and as such was very excited to face head on the challenge of propelling the Crypto exchange to newer heights. Some of Kwan’s previous accomplishments include being able to successfully restructure and relist a financial services firm that was bankrupt, being the driving force behind the creation of new operations, and being a member of numerous boards and committees.
Kwan stated that as well as being a market leader, BitMex shared her values when it comes to gender inclusion especially in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields. She added that the Crypto sector had created an opportunity for women to be involved in an industry that cuts across finance and technology, where they are grossly under-represented.
Bitmex Experiencing Major Growth
BitMex is currently experiencing major growth in its operations with the firm twice breaking the Bitcoin record for 24-hour trading in its third quarter of 2018. It has moved offices from the Victoria Harbor to the Cheung Kong Center which is among the most expensive commercial spaces in the world.
